Happy Trails

In 1988 I worked occasional weekends at Sound Odyssey Records. And as my friend Chip and I stocked shelves with records and CDs we naturally talked about music. To pass the hours we created a make-believe psychedelic radio show called Happy Trails. We had fun coming up with bands and far out songs to play on "our show." Then on WLFR where I hosted a New Age show, a time slot opened up on Friday mornings and they needed someone to fill it right away. We were ready! And Happy Trails became a reality.

It was an instant success. As we cued up albums and CDs, the phones constantly lit up with listener requests. I'd ask them for their street address (pre-email). And we mailed them flyers I'd created that played up the psychedelic theme of the show.

One of our listeners was a writer for the Atlantic City Press. He set up a photo shoot where we dressed the part of Psychedelic DJs. And he wrote several newspaper articles about us. Consequently our audience grew even more.

Then as I continued to co-host Happy Trails, I felt drawn to give up the New Age show and instead explore the roots of Rock n Roll. Which led to my next radio show, House Party Blues ...
