Naropa University
M.A. Transpersonal Psychology
and Ecopsychology
Boulder, Colorado
In 2005 I resigned from my position as Radio Station Director at Burlington County College. And began attending Naropa University in Colorado for a Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology. A psychology aimed at relieving stress by learning how to relax the analytical portion of the brain's functioning. The part that can obsess and get caught in a loop of inner chatter and over-analyzing. But when quieted allows access to another part of the brain's functioning that is a more relaxed and calm awareness, even in the midst of a busy day.
One of the most helpful ways to get out of the overthinking loop is stepping outdoors and looking around. Which throughout my life is how I spent my time away from work or school. I'd hike or paddle as far from human civilization as possible. And to quote Bob Dylan, "sit and watch the river flow." Which is why my Naropa studies also included Ecopsychology. One of the methods employed by Transpersonal Psychology for helping the mind relax and reboot.
So upon graduating from Naropa, I started a non-profit organization called EarthGym. An outdoor club bringing people together to explore nature. Which also included quiet time, where instead of talking through the whole thing, we'd hike or paddle silently for a bit. With the combined elements of physical activity, social interaction, and contemplative time in nature, EarthGym offered a unique way to help people relieve stress and regain a sense of balance.
Also after graduating from Naropa, I established my own counseling practice. And I returned to Z88.9-FM hosting a radio show called The Hart of Rock n Roll ...
