In August 1992, I returned to the Classic Rock station as a full-time Disc Jockey on the air weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. And I was also the Music Director. Which meant I received the new music that record companies mailed to our station. And it was my job to select the artists and songs to add to our playlist. Finally I was back to the part of radio that I loved, listening to and sharing music.

The late 1980s and early 1990s were a tremendous time for new bands that are now well known like Nirvana, Cracker, Stone Temple Pilots, Green Day, and so many others. Their music added a new vibrancy to Rock formats. However, both then and now, it is routine for music directors to select songs for airplay that the record company suggests. Usually the ones being released as singles from the album.

But having escaped the restricted playlist of the Oldies station, I wanted our playlist to be more adventurous. So I also added deeper album tracks. And I did the same for established Rock bands like, Cream, Hendrix, Zeppelin, etc. Pulling songs from deep into their albums so listeners could hear something different. Creating a well rounded Rock format that went beyond playing the same songs over and over.

I also found a spot for the feature I'd created in 1989 called, The Blues Had A Baby And They Named It Rock n Roll. By airing it on Mondays at 10 a.m. and renaming it Monday Morning Blues.

Then one day I learned about a job opening at WXPN in Philadelphia. It was a station that played all genres of music and was staffed by incredibly knowledgeable Disc Jockeys. The idea of possibly joining the 'XPN staff was intriguing ...
