KOOL Oldies
WKTU 98.3-FM
Ocean City, NJ
It was time to say good-bye to my other jobs and radio shows. Now I was a full-time Disc Jockey, on the air weeknights from 7:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight. My job also included being an integral part of the promotions department.

Oldies stations are part of the community fabric. Especially in a shore town like Ocean City with its vibrant boardwalk and beach scene. Our station played in restaurants, car dealerships, city hall, you name it. Area businesses advertised heavily on our station. And we were constantly offering on-air prizes including T-shirts, movie passes, cars, and vacations. Those local businesses also liked having in-store promotions with a KOOL Disc Jockey. I can't tell you how many businesses I was sent to.

I have photos of me everywhere. Like an ice cream parlor handing out T-shirts, a pizza place with the KOOL logo on their pies, and broadcasting live at night from an amusement pier. It was a happening time! But I liked my job best when I was alone in the studio playing music. And on Friday nights in the summer sharing the microphone with Philadelphia icon, Jerry Blavat, broadcasting live from Memories in Margate. However, it started to dawn on me that this was not the radio station for me.

I debated on sharing this, but here goes. One day the program director told me that he had gone through all the songs we played on the air and took out any that weren't number one hits. Because research showed that listeners change the channel when they hear a song they don't know. He figured since people are more likely to know number one hits, that's all we would play. And he successfully narrowed down our entire playlist to just 90 songs. Yikes!

Fortunately a few nights later while I was on the air, I answered the listener request line and it was my former boss from the Classic Rock station. He asked me to come back, offering me both a full-time air shift and the position of Music Director.
So back to Classic Rock I went ...
